Popular guides for US visitors

These pages answer the practical search questions Americans ask before they decide whether Canada is realistic for their family, budget, and job path.

Why Americans Are Moving Now

🏥

No Medical Bankruptcy

Universal healthcare covers doctor visits, ER, surgery, and hospital stays at $0 out-of-pocket. Medical debt is the #1 cause of personal bankruptcy in the US — not in Canada.

Americans pay avg $600–700/mo in premiums alone
🛡️

10× Safer from Gun Violence

Canada's gun homicide rate is ~0.5 per 100k. The US rate is ~5.0 per 100k — 10 times higher. No active shooter drills in Canadian schools.

👶

$10/Day Childcare

8 provinces have implemented the federal $10/day childcare deal. That's up to $16,200/year saved per child vs the US average of $18,000/year.

Political Stability

Parliamentary system, independent courts, and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Canada consistently ranks top 10 globally for democracy and rule of law.

⚖️

Stronger Worker Rights

Mandatory 2+ weeks vacation, employer-paid parental leave top-ups, and protections against at-will termination. Labour standards enforced provincially.

US is 1 of 2 countries with no federal paid parental leave
🎓

Affordable University

Canadian university tuition: $7k–14k CAD/year for residents. No six-figure student loan crisis. K–12 public education quality is more consistent across regions.

US average: $25k–$60k/year for a 4-year degree

🇨🇦 Trending in 2026: Citizenship by Descent (Bill C-3)

Canada recently removed the "first-generation limit". If you have a Canadian parent or grandparent, you may now be eligible to claim Canadian citizenship directly, bypassing the entire immigration process.

The Big 5 Differences

What actually changes when you cross the border

Canada: Universal coverage. $0 premiums, $0 deductible. Funded through taxes. Dental/vision separate.

Questions Americans Always Ask

Can I keep my US job and live in Canada?
It depends. If you work remotely for a US company, you'll need a valid Canadian work permit or PR status. Simply crossing the border to work remotely is not legal long-term. Some people use the CUSMA work permit or get sponsored. Tax implications are complex — you'll file in both countries.
How does Canadian healthcare actually work?
Each province runs its own plan (e.g., OHIP in Ontario, MSP in BC). As a permanent resident or work permit holder, you're covered for doctor visits, ER, surgery, and hospital stays at $0 out-of-pocket. Dental, vision, and prescriptions are NOT covered — most people get employer benefits or pay out-of-pocket. Wait times for specialists can be longer than in the US.
Do I need to give up my US citizenship?
No. Canada allows dual citizenship. You can be both a US citizen and a Canadian permanent resident (and eventually citizen). However, the US taxes worldwide income, so you'll continue filing US tax returns even while living in Canada. The US-Canada tax treaty helps avoid double taxation.
How do Canadian taxes compare to US taxes?
Canadian income taxes are generally higher (federal rates 15–33% + provincial 5–14%). However, you don't pay healthcare premiums, deductibles, or co-pays. When you add US healthcare costs to US taxes, the total effective burden is often similar. Alberta has the lowest provincial tax and no provincial sales tax — making it the most "American-feeling" province tax-wise.
What about the winters?
Yes, they're real. Vancouver/Victoria have mild winters similar to Seattle. Toronto is comparable to Chicago. The prairies (Calgary, Winnipeg) get to -30°C. But Canadians handle it well — cities are designed for it with underground malls, heated buses, and excellent snow removal. Many Americans say they adapt within one season.
Can I bring my pet?
Yes. Dogs and cats need a rabies vaccination certificate from a licensed vet. No quarantine required for pets from the US. The process is straightforward — just have your paperwork ready at the border.
